BREEDING AND HEAT CYCLES Heat (estrus) cycle How often does a female American Pit Bull come into heat? P.S. I don't need this answer right away. Female dogs come into heat (the estrus cycle) approximately every 6 months. This cycle can vary by up to 2 months either way. Also, dogs can have silent heats or persistent heats with cystic follicles. The first heat cycle is at 6 to 8 months of age. I recommend you spay your female dog before the first heat cycle because it lessens the chances of mammary tumors later in life by 80%.
