My 2 year old male (neutered) cat seems to want to "mark" or pee in the house. He is part indoor, part outdoor. The spots he's picking are generally inside an empty box or on top of a pile of clean laundry. He has a litter box, but usually waits until he's let outside. His "marking" has only been going on for about a month now. What could be going on?

The most likely explanation is a urinary tract infection with crystals. Your veterinarian can explain more if this is the case. All you need to verify this in a urinalysis performed on a fresh urine sample. The trick is getting a sample from a cat. You can lock him in a room with an empty, clean litter box. Any outside bacteria from the floor or other containers can contaminate the sample. Otherwise, your veterinarian can either squeeze a sample out or remove it with a needle and syringe. In these cases, your cat must have a full bladder when you bring him in.

Cat marking behaviors that are not medical can be treated with extra litter boxes and/or changes in the litter brand. Cat Attract can be added to the litter to stimulate your cat to go there. There is also a product called Feliway in a spray form or a diffuser for the room which makes your cat happy and forget why he is spraying.
